Preventing Teen Suicide

The United States routinely screens teens for vision and hearing loss, but not for a leading cause of death and disability – mental illness. Since 2002, we’ve worked with the TeenScreen National Center for Mental Health Checkups at Columbia University to expand teen mental health screening to 43 states. Now more than 500 schools and community organizations offer a free mental health check up. We helped develop partnerships between the National Center and Medscape to offer CME programs to health professionals and with EmblemHealth to offer free screenings in doctors’ offices nationwide. Our current focus is managing a coalition to ensure that mental health checkups are part of federal health care reform.
