Driving the Treatment Debate

Educating journalists and convincing them to report accurately and fairly is harder than ever…unless you make the journalist’s job a little easier. We regularly convene thought leaders with the media for in-depth discussions of science, public health and public policy. These expert sessions are substantive and newsworthy. Most important…they give reporters what they need – on the record commentary and answers to key questions.

To improve media coverage of child mental health we partnered with Columbia University’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Graduate School of Journalism for a two-day colloquium on campus. Over 75 print and broadcast reporters heard from leading scientists, advocates and elected officials on the state of mental health media coverage – and strategies to improve accuracy and information for families.

On the controversial subject of public policy for pain medicines we enlisted the National Press Foundation and the American Public Health Association. They hosted experts in science, patient experience, law enforcement and policy for a day-long session in Washington, D.C. Talks focused on laws that regulate medicines and the needs of cancer patients, active military, veterans and minority communities. Reporters got valuable storylines, interviews and data…as well as relationships with new expert sources.
